Is there some reason why a discussion is posted but you cannot respond to it?

Yes, if the person who posted the discussion chooses to 'Close Discussion', then that discussion ends. Please close this discussion :-)
Yes, Deepaak closed it because he doesn't want any more discussion on the topic. Fremont Citizens Network is all about "free exchange of ideas" though, just ask him!

Apparently they want to control the subjects discussed as well as the ability to respond to them, but still claim this is an open forum for discussion and ideas.

I do not want to stir anything but Michael is right. I have joined other forums and never have I had to be approved for membership! If you truly want an honest and open discussion on issues, you need to let people write what is on their minds. I am often surprised by the thoughts of people I don't agree with. I know that I will not close a discussion unless it becomes rude and/or abusive.
Kim, if I understand Deepak's post correctly, if you start a discussion in the forum, you can make the choice about when you want to close that discussion. That seems fair to me, since you wouldn't want other people to choose to close a discussion that you started for their own reasons, possibly because they didn't agree with your posts or the posts of others.

If you have thoughts that you would like to post on a discussion that has been closed by its originator, you can start your own discussion on that topic and then you will make the choice on when to close it.

I'm assuming here, but I think Deepak suggested that you close this discussion only because he thought that he had answered your question.
Fremonter,

I agree with Kim. What purpose does closing any discussion have except to stop people from discussing it further? When someone, anyone, replies to a post, it's now a discussion for the group as a whole, and should not be closed for any reason. If, as you said Deepak closed the discussion because he felt he hand answered the question, I'd like to ask how Deepak became the authority of whether my question has been answered?

I suspect that Deepak closed the discussions because he has that power here, and because he wanted to stop people from having a discussion about these subjects (in the great spirit of community activism).

To me, that is not a very open or fair way to do anyting. He seemed only to close things when I made note of his panicked "ALERT ALERT" post about how there was some underhanded post-pullout plot by the A's or the Mayor to secretly build the stadium anyway and how this panicked call-to-arms was just a bit silly in light of the fact that he was totally incorrect about the plot.

The conversation with Calvin was closed also. I suspect because he clearly did not read any of the statistics presented that refuted his assertion that Fremont was in better shape than the cities in the US that had ballparks. The data on unemployment showed that Fremont was bested by 22 of the 28 cities with ballparks).

It seems the Fremont Citizen's Network is only for some of it's citizens, usually the ones who run the website.

That is correct. Thanks fremonter.

What is correct? That YOU are the censor of the discussion here? That YOU decide when an adequate answer has been given?

Is there a ballot or some vote that shows that Deepak Alur is the able to arbitrarily censor people's opinions?

I'll ask the self-appointed censor: "why would anyone stop allowing people to discuss a subject and then claim to be open to other's opinions?"

What useful purpose does stopping an ongoing discussion have? How does stopping an ongoing discussion help people converse and exchange ideas? Why did you only stop the discussions after someone went against the offical FCN party line?

So because the software allows the person who posted something to stop the discussion, that means he should do it? What kind of free-flow of ideas is that?

Why did you stop the discussions Deepak?

Michael,
I closed my discussions I had started months ago since I feel they are no longer relevant. If you really want me to open a discussion I closed, let me know and I will do so.

The way this works is as 'fremonter' said, the person who starts the post has the permissions to close it. As Fremonter says, you can choose to start a discussion on your own, and you can close it whenever you choose to do so. If you want me to open any of those posts because you want to comment there, let me know and I will do so. I just don't see the point in some of those cases, but if you disagree, I will gladly oblige and open them up.

Yes, please open them all up. Stifling of discussion is generally a bad thing, wouldn't you agree?

You see, I'm not sure it matters if YOU don't see the point of further discussion, it matters only if there is someone who would like to discuss it, woulldn't you agree?
Just ask and you will get an answer and maybe even an apology. Don't assume and don't speak on my behalf. This forum is as free and as open as your mind wants to believe.

Re-opened what I could find were closed by me. If you happen to find something that is still closed, just let me know and I will open it if I happened to close it.

Note that the person who posts still will be able to close it and there is nothing I can do about that. Everyone still has the right to close out their own topics if they choose to do so. The fact that you can open a new topic if you want to continue discussion gives every user the power to not be stifled by anyone.

So, let me get clear on this. If I start a discussion, I need to get somebody else's permission before I make the choice to close it? By starting a discussion, do I take on the responsibility to survey every member of the site before I close it? If you have more to say on the same subject, why can't you just start your own discussion titled, for example, "Question on Contents 2"? Then you can choose to leave that discussion open as long as you want. Will all discussions remain open ad infinitem?
