Fremont Citizens Network

Hello everybody, last Tuesday the Fremont City Council unanimously approved the plan to build a skateboard park next to the Waterpark on Paseo Padre. The residents of the nearby area have been working with the city trying to change the site of the skatepark, placing it in a location that is better for the skaters and where the impact on residences could be minimized. The alternative sites the neighbors had proposed where: 1. the lot next to the park maintenance building; 2. the corner lot between Paseo Padre and Stevenson Blvd. The members of the city council showed more interest in the corner lot between Paseo Padre and Stevenson but were concerned that changing the location now could cause a few weeks delay and therefore decided to approve the current location. This shows very poor long term planning on their side. One of the main reasons the neighbors had proposed the corner lot is because it could easily accommodate the skatepark and a cricket field and the expenses for adding restrooms and bringing utilities would be shared by the two projects. At the same time the lot next to the Waterpark would remain open for plans to add an olympic size swimming pool that was one of the most requested sports facilities in the city of Fremont and would serve a much bigger community. It seems to me that the compatibility and synergy between the waterpark and the swimming pool is much higher than with the skatepark. At the same time the skaters could have a park that can be open until late without impacting the residents and has much higher visibility and better parking. The city council actually agreed with all the advantages of locating the skatepark in the corner lot but voted otherwise only based on the fact that they want to start construction soon. As nearby residents of the planned skatepark we are trying to reach out to other residents of Fremont in order to achieve a better solution for everybody. Both a swimming pool and a cricket field have been in high demand in Fremont and at least the swimming pool could be a revenue generating project. If the 3 project are considered together there are many advantages but mainly is the possibility to allocate the right place to the right project. The other advantage would be in saving taxpayer's money by sharing costs between the projects. What's wrong with that? If you have suggestions or would like to contact us and help us overturn this city council's decision please answer to this post or contact me through this network. Cricketers and swimmers' support is particularly welcome. If we can work together we might be able to obtain all the facilities better and faster. Thanks for reading!!
