Fremont Citizens Network

The Goliath Bay Area News Group (Argus) continues to cut back their local coverage. Their reporters publically state that they dont have time to ask the more in depth questions of our Mayor and Council because they are stretched too thinly - but they have plenty of time to discuss and present less pressing issues. Argus states that it is struggling to compete in the online world where news is "free" and that it's business model is being challenged in the modern world.

Against this backdrop of excuses, a tenacious David, the Tri City Voice somehow focusses considerable attention on local matters and is growing in its coverage. However TCV does it, their economic model appears to be thriving. In fact, their ability to service our community has allowed them to achieve adjudication.

WITHOUT reliance on paid subscriptions, the Tri City Voice newspaper is largely distributed free of cost and subsidized the old fashioned way. You can pick up a free copy at Dale Hardware or many other reliable locally-owned businesss. Of course, if you'd like it delivered to your home - you can subscribe for a modest charge. Or - pick it up online at your convenience. However you choose to read TCV, you need to know that the status of adjudication (and thus a portion of the TCV income model) is now being questioned and challenged in the courts by Bay Area News Group (Argus).

If you are already familiar with and value the TCV and the level of local coverage they provide, I encourage you to read and consider the request from William Marshank (follow the link below).

If you are unfamiliar with the TCV I strongly urge you to pick up this once weekly newspaper and flip quickly to the back to find William Marshanks editorials. You will find him a vigilant watchdog of Fremont politics and projects. . . something the Argus politely "excuses" it's way out of even as they haul TCV into court. I wish to emphasize that this posting is not SPAM. I have no relationship to TCV at all but have personally found that when ARGUS was not keeping me aware of happenings at City Hall, the TCV frequently had something to say. If you only read Marshanks weekly editorials - you'll be way ahead of 99% of Fremont populace in understanding critical community issues.

Even as Goliath claims they dont have the resource to properly serve our community, they have miraculously found resources to tie up our locally-owned David in the courts. . . . follow the link below and help if you can.

Thanks Bryan for cleaning up the link I attempted to provide.

How 'bout that ?

Argus is finding it difficult to offer more coverage within the boundaries it claims in its byline ( Fremont, Milpitas, Union City ) - but, Tri City Voice, for whatever reasons, is finding sufficient demand that it will now be increasing its coverage and distribution frequency. Tough economy for both I imagine - - - online services make it a challenge for ANY newspaper to carve out a value-add - - - - employees probably pressured to do lots of things with little time - - - but TCV is expanding . . . .

Maybe Marshak knows something about what local readers value when he says -

"Subscriptions, readership and community connections based on numbers collected from distant cities bear little relevance to local citizens. "

"Tri-City Voice is the only independently owned and operated local newspaper for Fremont, Newark, Union City, Milpitas and Hayward. The majority of our employees live within these borders."

He could have also added -

"Coverage of municipal politics is quickly recognized as just another promotional if not critical in its review."
Interesting contrast.

While I'm certainly glad that The Voice is here in town, and glad to hear that they're doing well and expanding their editions, I must say that, upon reviewing the article from your link, Mr. Marshak really needs to learn how to get to the point. Five paragraphs on the history of carnivals before he gets to his actual points? God love him, Bill could use a good editor - most of us don't have all day to spend on a bio of P.T. Barnum.
You are right Fremonter - - there have certainly been times I have felt that Marshak could get on to the issue at hand sooner in his Op Ed . . .

Marshak's style seems to want to make his topics more approachable through the use of analogy. Or perhaps he simply enjoys a perceived eloquence - I'm not sure.

I am sure that for some, the analog is completely unnecessary (i.e. WE get it already !) - - and appearently, some, like Fremonter, may find that it takes "all day" just to read a 5 paragraph Op Ed. . . .

One way or the other, Marshak's product is increasing in its demand while other, less verbose (and less critical) coverage is whining the economic blues.

Ourgas is back at it again.

Please read Sharon Marshak's appeal here -

Bay Area News Group continues to grind Fremont coverage to an absolute minimum within the pages of their daily and simultaneously drags the one truly "local" paper we have in our community into court.  THis wouldn't be so ironic except for Matt Artz' ongoing diatribe over "style points" .  . . . .  see the third in this "series" of rantings and critiques of Marshak's relative wordiness -

WHy is it that Artz and Co have the time and money to poke fun at their competition and drag them through the courts but can't seem to get more than a couple of inches of coverage dedicated to the area that their masthead claims to represent ??
